What Is Feng Shui and What Is Its Purpose?

Every time you get out of bed and start your day, your home is usually the first thing you’ll see. Waking up to a well-organized house can be quite motivating and can give you a good vibe to start your day with. If this is not the case for you, it may be a good idea to start reorganizing your house using the principles of Feng Shui.

In this article, we’ll be discussing Feng Shui and what is Feng Shui based on? We’ll also be discussing how you can attract more money into your life just by simply reorganizing your home.

Feng Shui is the art of arrangement using traditional Chinese principles. The general idea of this is how to let the Qi or Chi, the universal energy, flow within the areas of your home and how you can utilize this energy to bring more positivity into your life.

Chi is present in all things and carries both positive and negative, or Yin and Yang as some may call it.

“Feng” is a Chinese word that literally translates to the wind, which is a metaphor to the force that pushes the energies towards a path. While “Shui” literally translates to water and is a metaphor to the flow that carries these energies to different spaces.

Due to cultural differences, people who grew up outside Chinese influence may think that Feng Shui is mostly based on superstitious beliefs. This is not the case, however.

Feng Shui is actually based on the perfect balance observed from elements of nature. Namely, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. All of these elements are represented by their own color correspondence and shapes/symbols and have their own ways of affecting Chi.

Fire

  • Represented by colors with a tint of redness such as Red itself, Orange, Yellow, Purple, and Pink. Invigorating colors that manifest a strong flow of energy in an area.

Earth

  • Represented by colors with a tint of yellowness such as Light Yellow to Light Brown. They are a gentler set of warm colors compared to fire. These colors uplift the mood and excite the mind.

Metal

  • Represented by colors White and Gray. These colors provide a sense of comfort for past achievements and hope for new beginnings.

Water

  • Represented by colors under the Blue hue and the color Black. Opposite to the invigorating fire colors, these colors promote relaxation and calmness.

Wood

  • Represented by colors of nature. Green and Brown. These colors promote a feel-at-home vibe and make you feel settled and nurtured.

Feng Shui aims to imitate the elemental balance observed in nature and apply it by arranging related colors or symbols of each element within your house. The harmony between these elements creates a good flow of Chi within your home, thus promoting a good living environment and bringing more positivity into our lives.

The principle of Feng Shui is similar to Fick’s Law of Diffusion. But instead of molecules, what is being diffused around your home is a type of energy. It may not be an exaggeration to say that Feng Shui has a science involved in it. After all, both concepts were derived from the laws of nature.

When we hear the word “Feng Shui”, the first thing that usually comes to our minds is a method for attracting money. However, there is more to it than just financial gains. Different directions in an area are related to different aspects of your life, and Feng Shui has been proven to help improve more than just our finances.

When a place gets evaluated for Feng Shui, a Feng Shui expert brings a special compass to determine which sides North, East, West, and South. This is because the 8 directions from the center of your home are related to different areas of your lives. Depending on which area of your life you would want to focus on, the Feng Shui master will try to increase the flow in that particular area of your home. Depending on what aspect of your life you want to improve, you can use these colors interchangeably.

Naturally, we would want to increase all aspects of our lives. But the Feng Shui is a never-ending learning process, even for experts. Understanding the in-depth concept of it will require time and effort. So for now, let’s discuss the most common question about Feng Shui.

From this point, we’ve already understood that Feng Shui affects many aspects of our lives. To some degree, we can all agree that the word “Feng Shui”  is commonly synonymous with wealth and money.

A common misconception to Feng Shui is that applying it to your home will deliver all the good things to your doorstep. That somehow money magically finds its way into your home, or you win the lottery. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.

Rather than Feng Shui opening your door for money to come in, it opens the door of opportunities for you. By using the ever-present energy source, Chi, you utilize this energy to set the ideal conditions for grabbing the opportunities presented to you.

According to Feng Shui principles, the following will help set the proper environment for you to attract and make money:

  • Increasing the Chi flow in your work area. May this be in your office and your home, promoting the flow of Chi in places where you make money increases your productivity. Clearing the clutter in your workspace is a good way to start letting the Chi flow through
  • Placing wealth-oriented decorationsGold-colored decorations are commonly used for this as the color is deeply associated with wealth. Placing a bowl of coins or wealth crystals are also another type of decorations you can use for this. By placing symbols related to wealth in your workplace, you are conditioning your mind to work towards your goal, which is to make money.
  • Placing a Feng Shui aquarium. The presence of life itself in an area improves the flow of Chi. The water element also helps create a peaceful environment while you work. Placing gold-colored fish such as golden koi fish or goldfishes also serves as a wealth oriented decoration.
  • Placing a small healthy plant. Aside from cleansing the air, it also helps circulate the Chi in your workplace. Plants can also be reflected upon as a symbol of your financial growth. Though you can use any plant for this, traditional Feng Shui prefers money plants that are believed to bring auspiciousness.
Money plants or Money trees, in Chinese culture, are known to bring good fortune when it comes to your finances and attracts more wealth compared to using a regular plant. Although there is no scientific basis on how they attract good fortune, keeping money plants in your house are known to have these positive effects:
  • Cleans the air and oxygenates the house.
  • Absorbs radiation from nearby electronics.
  • Adds hominess to an area.
  • It promotes relaxation and reduces stress.

Chinese culture holds a certain belief that plants with rounded leaves are auspicious and brings good fortune to a household. Hence, they are commonly used as money plants for Feng Shui.

Here are some of the plants which are known to bring good fortune in your finances.

  1. Pachira aquatica. A plant from the bonsai family that is usually braided together in threes or fives to form the common money plant. As four is considered an unlucky number in Chinese culture, it is never used when braiding these plants.
  2. Jade plant. A plant which is often seen in business establishments, they sprout a large number of round leaves which are believed to be a bringer of good fortune
  3. Feng Shui money tree. This is a pachira aquatica plant customized with auspicious items such as coins and wealth crystals. Sometimes, a touch of gold color is also applied to it.
  4. Lucky bamboo plant. Although it does not fit in the rounded-leaf category of money plants, lucky bamboo is one of the most used plants in Feng Shui. This plant always displayed incorporating the 5 elements of Feng Shui. Depending on the number of stalks of bamboo, it can provide good fortune in a specific area of your life. For inviting good fortune in wealth, 8 stalks are always used.

One important thing you should remember is that Feng Shui is not a one-time cure. Rather, it improves your life over time the more you apply it within your home.

As the balance of nature is ever-changing, so are we. Once we’ve achieved our desired improvement through Feng Shui, we can rearrange our home to address certain areas of our lives that need to be improved.

Feng Shui provides us with the opportunity to improve our lives. However, it’s still up to our own efforts if we want to make a change. After all, money does not grow on trees. Even if it’s a Feng Shui money tree.
